White Fillings
Our dentists primarily use a white filling material called composite resin. It's more cosmetically appealing because the shade is matched to your natural tooth structure, and it has the strength to withstand heavy biting forces.
Where white fillings are used
White fillings can be placed on back or front teeth to restore decay, close gaps or spaces between teeth, or to bond front teeth for cosmetic reasons.
Replacing older silver fillings
Many patients have concerns about silver (amalgam) fillings. In previous years amalgam was the restorative material of choice; with advances in materials, white filling material has replaced it. Eliminating corrosion and greyish discolouration gives you a healthier-looking smile.
If you're concerned about mercury in silver fillings, we can discuss replacing them with white filling material. At every check-up we assess older fillings and may suggest replacing tarnished or broken-down silver restorations.
Comfort during your appointment
For filling appointments — especially when removing an old silver filling — we recommend a rubber dam. It's a thin, latex-free sheet that isolates the tooth being treated and prevents water from collecting at the back of your throat, reducing gagging and increasing comfort and safety.
