Root Canal Therapy

Deep decay can infect the nerve of a tooth and cause an abscess to form. Sometimes that infection is completely asymptomatic; sometimes it causes significant discomfort. Root canal therapy treats the infection in an effort to save the tooth.

What the procedure involves

An exam is required first to evaluate whether the tooth can undergo a root canal. Our goal is to relieve any pain the infection is causing and to prevent it spreading elsewhere in the body.

During treatment the tooth is fully numbed so there's no pain or discomfort. The pulp (nerve) is removed and the infection is cleaned out with instruments and medicaments. A filling and crown are usually recommended afterwards to protect the tooth from further breakage and to protect the investment you've made in it.

When we refer

Depending on the tooth, the severity of the infection, or the root anatomy, treatment may be better handled by an endodontist. We work with wonderful specialists throughout the area and will make a referral when that gives you the best prognosis.
